Next week the 4th grade will be starting to create their own Animal Moasics. We will be looking at a variety of mosaic examples specifically the artist, Winold Reiss and his mosaic murals.
The students will be selecting their animal of choice keeping in mind that they will have their mosaic on a piece of black paper. (animals with brighter colors work better)
We will cutting out small pieces of color using magazine paper. What's so cool about using magazine paper is that the students will end up with multiple shades of one color. Another thing that student's will discover that some paper will have words or texture on them and that's okay, it actually will make their animal more interesting.

Hello-
I'm currently a K-8 Art teacher in Arizona. I just happened upon your Animal Mosaic lesson. Looks fantastic!
What what images did your students look at to create these?
Did they have the images with them at all times? Did you provide them, or did they have to find them in magazines?
Also, what technique did you use to adhere the pieces to the paper? Glue stick or something else?
Thanks so much and keep up the good work!

Lora,
For their mosaics, we looked at a variety of art pieces for different places all over the world like Greece and Egypt. I also showed them images from the mosaic muralist, Winold Reiss.
The first day I have animal cards out at each table and they use those to draw their animals in pencil. After they have drawn out their animal, they no longer need the animal card.
From there they cut out small pieces of magazine paper and overlap the pieces. They use just glue sticks which work very well.

*Tip: I rip out the magazine paper ahead of time and place them in different boxes labeled by color. It cuts down on the time students spend looking through the magazines.

Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
